THE SCIENCE OF INNOVATION LAB

Joel is the founder and director of the University of New South Wales’ Science of Innovation Lab or SIL. A hands on empirical lab that develops new methods to scientifically study all related aspects of innovation using Psychology and Neuroscience. Many of the qualities or skills thought to be important for innovation: intuition, creativity, resilience, thinking outside the box etc. rely on subjective self-report questionnaires or are considered beyond the scope of science we are changing all that!

AGILE SCIENCE

If the past is anything to go by, the most exciting and surprising scientific discoveries of the 21st century will likely involve a good chunk of accidental breakthroughs. Those not accidental will likely involve large amounts of rapid iterative pilot testing. However, these two dimensions of conducting science are not formally part of the classical scientific method, and are routinely absent in many school and university courses and textbooks.

Joel has developed a methodology called Agile Science, which is a practical guide to both practising and reporting scientific discoveries. It aims to boost scientific discovery, while increasing the efficiency of science through lean practice and provides a template for transparently reporting how discoveries are actually made. It is ‘Lean startup’ for science.

Since 2009 Joel has been the director of the Pearson cognitive neuroscience lab at The University of New South Wales in Sydney. Here Joel and his team run experiments into all kinds of aspects of the human mind and brain. From the human imagination, decision making and intuition, to visual perception and hallucinations. The group uses a diverse array of methods and innovative techniques to measure the mind and brain.

HACKING PSYCHOLOGY TO MEASURE THE MIND

Online dating, how many of us lie about our profiles to change someone’s perception about us? Do we really say what we think? How do we measure one’s mind? In this TEDx talk Dr. Joel talks about the ways and techniques scientists and psychologists can hack into our brains. Through techniques such as visual illusions and emotional inception, we learn about how malleable our brains can be and the means in which we can measure it.

Joel is the founder and MD of MindX, a company that develops new technologies to accurately and objectively measure the mind. MindX works with advertising companies, Brands, HR, innovation consultants, executive education and universities.

ART AND FILM

Joel started his career studying art and filmmaking at one of Australia’s top fine arts school, Collage of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, he focussed on digital film. However, he then decided to apply his strong passion for creative discovery to the scientific mysteries of human consciousness and the complexities of brain.
